If you travel beyond Sligo, the countryside will change. The road twists and turns before the landscape opens into sweeping panoramas of empty shores, rocky hillsides, and freezing mists from the sea. When you reach this point, you have found the beautiful, austere and completely unforgettable, Donegal Ireland. This area encompasses the Slieve League, the highest cliffs in Europe, as well as miles of sandy, golden beaches. Whether you are into water sports or unforgettable country strolls, Donegal has it all, perfect for settling down to do a little sightseeing.
At the mouth of Donegal Bay, and surrounded by the Blue Stack mountains, you will find Donegal Town. Roads from Killybegs, Ballyshannon and Ballybofey converge at the centre of town, which is known as the Diamond. Shops, pubs, restaurants and coffee houses surround this spacious area, and it is very pedestrian friendly.
Donegal Ireland and the O’Donnell Clan

Donegal Ireland draws some of its fame because it was the former home of the O’Donnell Clan, who played a central role in the history of Ireland. From the 15th to the 17th century, the O’Donnell’s were the main opposition to the colonization of Ireland, by England. In the town, you will find the Donegal Castle. It sits on the bank of the River Eske, along with the remains of a Franciscan Abbey. This castle was built by the first of the Red Hughs and his wife, and they are also credited with bringing in the Franciscan Monks. Built in 1474, this abbey is where the Annals of the Four Masters were begun.
The O’Donnells were badly defeated in the Battle of Kinsale, in 1601, and along with other Chieftains, were forced into exile. Known as the Flight of the Earls, this occurred from Rathmullan in 1607. The Franciscan community stayed until 1600, enjoying the protection of the O’Donnells. After that, however, they were forced to wander. Four of the friars made Donegal Ireland immortal by their anthology, which has become known as The Annals of the Four Masters. It is a very important source of early Irish history. In the centre of Donegal Town’s Diamond, you will find The Monument, which was dedicated to the authors of this great historical accounting.

There is plenty to do and see in Donegal Ireland
The River Eske flows from Lough Eske, which is one of the loveliest lakes in Ireland, and enters the sea at Rossnowlagh. Beside the lake, you will see tall gateposts marking the road that leads to Lough Eske Castle. Six miles outside of Donegal Town is the Murvagh Golf Course, which is an 18 hole championship links course on the shores of Donegal Bay. Tourists will also enjoy the Donegal Craft Village. This attractive facility is a cluster of workshops, grouped around a courtyard. You will find hand weaving, pottery, jewellery, painting and even an Uilleann Pipe maker.
